About

Dr Max Mongelli is a Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney, Australia. Formerly served as a Clinical Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Western Clinical School, Nepean Hospital, University of Sydney, NSW. He holds the Best Established Researcher Award by Nepean Medical Foundation. He has written more than 85 articles in the field of obstetrician and gynecology and also co-authored a book on fetal growth with Professor Tambyraja named “The Low Birth Weight Baby” in Singapore. Dr. Max Mongeli is an extraordinary man who believes that there is no shortcut for success. He worked very hard to get success in his life. He received several distinctions and prizes for his research and studies. He has a long list of academic and professional qualification which he gained during his tenure.

Early Life

Max Mongelli was born in Italy and during his teenage life he migrated to Australia with his family. Max was a brilliant student. He completed his schooling from Drummoyne Boys’ High school. He got highest mark in the school and got the achievement of school topper. In 1975 after completing his schooling, he started his medical education. After 5 years of medical education he gained his undergraduate medical training from the University of Sydney.

In 1987, he moved to New Zealand. Following postgraduate studies, the University of Auckland granted the Diploma of Obstetrics . This was followed by formal specialist and clinical research training in the NHS, United Kingdom. In 1996 he obtained the degree of DM (Doctor of Medicine) from the University of Nottingham.

Dr Max was a very hard-working student and a keen learner. With his academic qualification he managed to get his professional qualification too. In 1990 after completing his MBBS he cleared MRCOG exam but his studies did not end there. Following further training he gained the FRANZCOG examination in 1998. Finally in 2003, he was awarded the FRCOG degree.

Dr Max not only likes to do research about obstetrics, but also loves to do photography, bush walking, reading, cooking and travelling. From his busy schedule he somehow managed to get some time for his hobbies.

Teaching Experience

Apart from being a great student Dr Max is also a great teacher. He started his teaching career as a Tutor in Histopathology at Sydney University in 1980. From 1992-1995, he was busy with Organization of lectures and tutorials for the MRCOG (Part I, Part II) courses held in Nottingham. After this he supervised research projects by Master of Philosophy students in Hong Kong and undergraduate research projects in Singapore.

In 2000, he implemented problem-based learning in the undergraduate Obstetrics and Gynecology medical curriculum, National University of Singapore. He also served as an examiner at Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for about 8 years.

Due to his vast experience in academic and professional fields of medicine, Dr Max Mongelli has in the past been engaged in developing the curriculum for undergraduate medical and non medical courses.

In 2002-2003, he contributed to the development of an undergraduate module in Evidence-Based Medicine in National University of Singapore (GEM 1503M). This module was aimed at non-medical undergraduate students with an interest in Evidence-based Medicine. It consisted of 6 lectures covering the following topics:

  • “What is Evidence in Medicine?
  • “Case reports. Case-control studies and observational studies”
  • “Decision analysis”
  • “Randomised Controlled Trials”
  • “Summarising results: CATS & Meta-Analysis”
  • “Assessment of Clinical Diagnostic Tests”

He also contributed a curriculum for web based undergraduate medical courses in which he included the topic “Drugs in Pregnancy” and “Assessment of Gestational Age”. He also shared his excellence in Development and Supervision of Special Study (Research) Modules for undergraduate medical students at the National University of Singapore. This was the great help by Dr Max for the undergraduate medical students.

In 2007, Dr Max was appointed as a convener for Journal Club, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Napean Hospital and currently he is the Senior Staff Specialist and Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Western Clinical School, Nepean Hospital, University of Sydney, NSW

Recognition

Dr Max is a very active player. He got much recognition from various departments from the field of medical and sciences. He was appointed as a Chairman of Organizing Committee for Biennial Scientific Meeting of the Perinatal Society of Singapore, 2002. He was also a Member of the Organizing Committee for 5th & 6th Refresher Course of Obstetric & Gynecological Society of Singapore. He served as a convener at National University Hospital Perinatal Postgraduate meetings and as a treasurer for Perinantal Society of Singapore.

Dr Max also served for many societies including-

  • Royal Society of Medicine (1997)
  • The Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (1998)
  • The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (2003)

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

Dr Max first thesis was on the topic "Immunology of spontaneous and induced tumours in the DA Rat" B Sc (Med.) at University of Sydney in 1980.

His second thesis got published in 1996. This was on the topic "An investigation of fetal growth in relation to pregnancy characteristics". It was D.M. Thesis at University of Nottingham.

He also contributed to the world of medicine by writing a book on “Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Perspective: The Low Birth Weight Baby” with Tambyraja R (eds) at Orient Longman, Hyderabad 2002. ISBN 81 250 2318 6.

Dr Max presented various papers indifferent conferences at global level. He submitted his last papers in 2015 at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Montreal, Canada.
